Robert Garofalo, MD, MPH, Amy Herrick, MA, Brian S. Mustanski, PhD and Geri Rachel Donenberg, PhD

Using the Internet to meet sexual partners was common; 48% of our sample had sexual relations with a partner they met online. Of these, only 53% used condoms consistently, and 47% reported having sexual partners older (>4 years) than themselves. Young men who have sex with men and who seek partners online also engage in other behaviors that place them at risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. [

A substantial percentage of YMSM in this sample used methamphetamine. Methamphetamine use is a public health problem with significant implications for the health and well-being of YMSM. Methamphetamine use was associated with human immunodeficiency virus–related risk, and patterns of use were predicted by demographic data, sexualized social contexts, and psychological variables. Jennifer S. Hirsch, PhD, Sergio Meneses, MD, MA, Brenda Thompson, MPH, Mirka Negroni, MA, Blanca Pelcastre, PhD and Carlos del Rio, MD

Culturally constructed notions of reputation in this community lead to sexual behavior designed to minimize men’s social risk (threats to one’s social status or relationships), rather than viral risk and that men’s desire for companionate intimacy may actually increase women’s risk for HIV infection. Anal sex with nonsteady partners without using a condom remains a high-risk behavior (1991)
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

[R]elapse from safer sex to riskier practices has been documented among homosexual/bisexual men (5). The increasing prevalence of quinolone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (QRNG) in the United States is a cause for concern...The Michigan Department of Community Health developed a sentinel surveillance program to detect antimicrobial drug resistance in N. gonorrhoeae. Sentinel surveillance from 11 laboratories submitted 1,122 isolates for antimicrobial drug susceptibility testing and detected 2 clusters of QRNG from January 2003 to September 2004...In response, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) established a sentinel surveillance system to monitor the prevalence of drug-resistant gonorrhea, characterize patients with drug-resistant infections, and provide local treatment recommendations in Michigan. Before 2003, only sporadic cases of QRNG were detected in Michigan; all of these patients acquired their infections during foreign travel. However, resistant strains might have gone undetected...
